The Greenock & District Championship Finals were held on Wellington Park Bowling Club on Saturday 18th of August.. A large crowd of spectators watching enjoyed the warm sunshine and even more so they must have enjoyed the excellent standard of bowling on display.
The Singles game between Gourock's Jim Twaddle and I.B.M's John Hampsey went right to the wire as John fought back from 18 shots to 8 down to win by 21 shots to 20. The game looked as if it was slipping from John's reach when he lost a "four" which left him trailing at 18 to 8 down.A lot of players would have let their heads go down but not John, he fought back with a excellent display of bowling and reduced Jim's lead to only"2" shots at 20 shots to 19. Jim Twaddle looked to have the final shot he required to win the game when he was lying shot and John only had one bowl remaining to save the game. John was showing no signs of nerves as he stood on the Mat to play the ultimate "pressure shot" and promply delivered a breathtaking weighted bowl which connected with Jim's shot and pushed the "Jack" clear of the "Rink" and therefore "burning" the end and keeping the game alive. In the next end, John gained the "2" shots that he needed and become Greenock & District Champion 2001.
The Pairs was won by Kilmacolm's David Brown and Tom McAlees by 21 shots to 12 against Alex Lee and Robert Harron of IBM.This game was close for most of the 17 ends, but the heavy rain that fell during the last 4 or 5 ends completely changed the game.
The Triples Final between Ardgowan and Grosvenor was a close fought encounter, with Ian McSwan,George Gurney and Peter Johnstone defeating Grosvenor's T Wilson,George Felgate and John Freeburn by 16 shots to 13.
