The President's Final between Jim Mc Cready and Terry Duffy
has to rate amongst the all time classic games ever witnessed at Gourock Park. Played in perfect weather this game was a joy to watch from start to finish.
First point of the night went to Jim before Terry gained a slight advantage early on to lead 5 shots to 1 after just three ends played. Young Jim replied with a further single and then Terry regained his four shot lead with a single in the 5th end.

Jim then turned the game around by winning the next three ends to take the lead at 8 shots to 6. With both players playing some breathtaking shots, this game was looking as if it could go right to the wire. Terry brought the game level at 10 ends played with two singles to peel at 8 shots all.
The game was peeled again at 13 all and once again at 16 as both players put on a fine display of bowling skills.
Young Jim, who is recovering from illness, must have felt exhausted in the warm summer sunshine, but it didnt show as he continued to deliver that important shot when it mattered and indeed he took the lead once again at the 21st end with a single to lead by 17 shots to 16.
Terry Duffy then delivered one of the best controlled shots i have seen in years when facing at least 2 shots down which would have left him with an uphill battle to survive, he weighed up the options before unleashing an inch perfect take out shot which removed Jim's 2 shots from the head and sit perfect to take 3 shots to take him back into the lead at 19 shots to 17.
Terry edged that little bit closer to the winning post at the next to leave him needing just one shot to clinch the game. As most of you bowlers out there will know, that last shot needed to clinch a game is by far the hardest shot to get and Terry found that out to be true when at the next Jim was spot on with his precision bowling and brought the tie to 20 shots all with a brilliant double at the 25th end.
The Players shook hands knowing that this, barring a burnt end, would be the deciding end. The early bowls of the last end were probably affected by the tension of the event and neither player was within 3 feet of the jack. However this all changed when Terry delivered the killer shot with his third of the end, which landed perfectly beside the target leaving Jim just one bowl to try and make a difference.

It wasnt going to be an easy shot, he had to decide does he go for the controlled shot  to remove Terry's matchwinner or the perfectly weighted draw just to chap and lie. After studying the head, Jim decided to go for the drawing shot which unfortunately failed its intended task.
Before walking up the green to congratulate his opponent, Jim picked up Terry's bowl and delivered a perfectly controlled shot, which ironically displaced the shot bowl, which was greeted by loud aplause by the watching spectators. This was a game where it was a shame there could only be one winner, as both players played like champions and neither of them deserved to lose.
Congratulations to both players on an excellent display of bowling skills.
