27th June 2002 The Greenock & district leagues are now on their 'Fair holiday break' and I thought its time i summed up what I think of the league season so far and off how things are shaping up in the two leagues. So far the weather has been the biggest disapointment, its either been pouring from the heavens or cold and windy apart from the odd night where it stayed dry,but the 'midges' ate anything that moved. Section one is once again being dominated by Port Glasgow, but with only 3 games remaining, the run in for them could be close as both Wellington and Grosvenor are snapping at their heels closely behind them. Grosvenor in particular have a great chance to close the gap as they still have to play Port Glasgow. A win for Grosvenor in this game and Wellington's recent form continuing could see it going down to the last game.
At the other end of the league, it looks all over for the combined efforts of Lady Alice and Inverkip, as they looked as if they have left any chance of a comeback too late. Of the other Clubs fighting to escape relegation, is one Club that I would never have predicted to be fighting relegation, Gourock's 'A' team have struggled all season to get results, yet strangely enough, their 'B' Team are chasing promotion in Section2. Gourock are joined in the relegation battle along with Gourock Park, Kilmacolm and Victoria The two Gourock Clubs still have to play each other which will lead to an exciting 'local derby' as its one nobody can afford to drop points in!. Section 2 Champions this year will be Fort Matilda! Well thats my opinon after studying the remaining games and the '10 point gap' that exists between them and nearest challengers, Gourock. As for who will gain that second promotion place? I think Gourock should be strong enough to throw off the challenge from Parklea. The loss of three experienced players at Gourock Park, Robert Grant (to IBM), Dougie Twaddle (to Port Glasgow) and Robert Hughes has with no doubt weakened Gourock Park's efforts to reach the heights of 2000, when we finished runners-up to Port Glasgow and instead the Selection committee have struggled to find a consistent balance with the remaining players. However I remain confident that we at 'The Park' can gain enough points from our remaining fixtures against Gourock, La/Inverkip and Wellington to stay in section one for next Season. We have several new players who have done exceptionally well, Russell Clark, only joined last year and is developing into one of our most consistent 'leads', Michael Stevenson has done well considering he was thrown in at the deep end, playing 'third' to John Hagen in the last few games or so, despite this being only his first Season of competive bowling.
Well thats me had my say! What do you think? Who will win the League? Who will face the drop? Write in and tell me your thoughts! I will place the best ones on the site before the League re-commences after the break.
For those of you who joined the Mailing List, now that the upgrade of my Server Host, Homestead is complete, I will be attempting to add you all to a new Mailing list, as Homestead no longer support the old one.Hopefully this will be up and running within the next week.
