The Davidson Pairs Trophy
2003
Sponsored by
On what could only be described as perfect weather conditions, the annual Gourock Park Open Pairs Tournament,
The Davidson Trophy, was another highly enjoyable day for both players and spectators. Sponsored by local Car retailers, The Crawfurd Car Centre, this event is one of the most popular events in the annual bowling calendar. The entry forms are snapped up each year as if they were lined with gold, as bowlers throughout the district are eager to make sure they do not miss out on what is a brilliant day out.
The event started at 10am as the first of the 48 competing pairs took to the greens to try and top their group in the initial round robin stages of eight groups each containing 6 Pairs all playing 5 ends with 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw. At around 4pm, the eight group winners then progressed onto the knockout stages, which were played over 7 ends until the Final which was over 11 ends.

The Bar and kitchen within the Clubhouse were doing a roaring trade as the players came in from each game and depending on whether or not they still had a chance of progressing, some of them paid more attention to the Bar than the delights offered up by the hard working Ladies of Gourock Park.
The Final was between Alex Campbell and Willie Boyd of
Grosvenor Bowling Club against Tom Fay of Grosvenor and
David Quigley from IBM Bowling Club.
Alex and Willie the lead in the early stages of the final with singles at the first and second ends. The standard of bowling was excellent as
Tom and David hit back with doubles in the 3rd and 4th ends and a further single in the 5th to lead by 5 shots to 2 shots.
The Grosvenor Pair gained one more shot in the next end to reduce the deficit but after that they lost a four which left them losing by 9 shots to 3 after 7 ends of the scheduled 11 ends. Any hopes they had of a comeback where quickly erased as Tom and David gained a further three singles to win the match without the need to play the last end.
