The Fort Matilda Open Pairs is always eagerly awaited by Bowlers from in and around the Inverclyde area. The event takes place over two days with the opening games starting at 8.50 am. 48 Pairs are split into eight sections each playing a round robin of 5 ends and it was around 8.45pm before the eight section winning pairs were known. The weather on the first day was mostly warm and sunny and the hard working Ladies and Barstaff worked tirelessly to ensure the players were always well nourished and well watered!.
Several players from Gourock Park took part in the event, but only Terry Duffy and Jim Crawford emerged as section winners to progress onto the second phase along with the following Pairs who also progressed as section winners at the end of a long first day. C & W Mc Eachnie (Grosvenor) I Creelman and J O'Donnell (IBM), Mrs J Currie and Mrs J Hyde (Fort Matilda), I Mc Swann & I Ferdinand (Ardgowan & Fort Matilda), D Mc Lean and W Boffey (Grosvenor), S & W Thomson (Fort Matilda) and finally A Hutchison & W Taylor (Skelmorlie).
Day two got underway around 1.30pm with the eight section winners being split into two groups playing a round robin of 6 ends playing for 2 points a win, 1 for a draw. with the winner of each section then going head to head in the Final
The Final was between Grosvenor's William and Colin Mc Eachnie against Joe O'Donnell and Ian Creelman from IBM. The IBM pair were just in front after around 6 ends in a highly entertaining game, but the brothers duo took control of the game with some excellent bowling to take a 12 shots to 5 shots after nine ends of the scheduled eleven to be played. The IBM pair needed to make sure they scored as many as possible in the tenth end to give them any hope of overcoming the Grosvenor's lead, but the Brothers were not in any mood to give their opponents a way back and secured victory with another 2 shots to win by 14 shots to 5 shots after ten ends and become the Fort Matilda Open Pairs Champions for Season 2003.
