The Greenock & District Championship Finals Day
Inverkip BC 17th August 2002
This year's G&D Finals were played at Inverkip and as usual the standard of bowling on display was of an exceptional quality.Play got underway in fine warm weather, although it later turned miserable towards the end of play, when heavy rain blighted the last few ends of some of the games and the presentation of prizes which was made by Mrs Small, wife of G&D President, Billy Small.

The highlight of the Finals in my opinon, was the game between Grosvenor's Bryan Gorry and Gourock Park's Michael Stevenson in the Junior Singles. This was a fine display of bowling at its sporting best and both players produced some excellent shots to keep the watching spectators happy. Right from the 1st end, this game was close and it was difficult to predict a winner as each player took a turn of leading by the odd shot or two. Michael, who has only just took up the game, produced what many will say was 'shot of the day' , when with Bryan lying game at 20 v 17, delivered a perfectly delivered shot to trail the jack around to his back two bowls and tie the game at 20 all. This was a great shot considering the pressure Michael must have been under and one which I am sure he will remember for a long time.
The last end was down to who could get that first 'shot' in to put pressure on his opponent, and it was Grosvenor's Bryan Gorry that did this with his first shot of the final end. Michael tried in vain to remove Bryan's bowl, but he was unable to do so, and so it was Bryans title. This was a game that it was a shame someone had to lose and both players are to be congratulated on producing a game that promoted the game of bowls so well.

The Singles was one by Wellington's Alan McEwan in another close game, defeating Freddy Kimmons of Port Glasgow by 21 shots to 15.

The Pairs went to Alan Bradley and G Felgate of Grosvenor who defeated J Graham &  G Glover of Parklea by 25 shots to 8
.
The Triples title went to F McCaig, R Turner & G Lyndsay from Victoria who defeated T Kane, D McLean & John Freeburn of Grosvenor by 18 shots to 9.
The Fours was an all Gourock affair in which R Brown, J Millar, R Wasson & RB Scott from Gourock BC overcame Gourock Park's Bertie Davidson, John Kane, Ian Brown and Dougie Brown by 17 shots to 16.

The Senior Fours was won by J Lyndsay, R Currie, J Halliday & C Barr of Ardgowan defeating Birkmyre's rink of D Logan, D Morrison, J McKay & T Buchanan
