The S.B.A. Mixed Pairs District 23 Final
Saturday 12th July 2003
The Final between Kilmacolm's Tom Mc Lees and Isobel Gallagher against Rothesay's Donnie Mc Kellar and Cath Lobo took place today at Ardgowan BC. A healthy crowd of specators looked on as the Kilmacolm Pair were in great form to race into a 11 to 1 shot lead after just seven ends. Cath and Donnie bravely fought on and brought the score back to a more healthy looking 11 to 5 shot deficit at the 9th end.
However it was all for nothing as Tom and especially Isobel were in outstanding form and powered on to win by 21 shots to 5 after 15 ends.

Inverclyde now has its third Bowling Club Website. The Gourock Bowling Club, has joined Gourock Park and Kilmacolm
Bowling Clubs on the World Wide Web The Site has been produced by Graham Paterick and although still in the early stages of development it is well worth a visit. Visit the site here The Gourock Bowling Club

SBA National Finals 19th July 2003
Congratulations to Ardgowan's Senior Fours who narrowly lost out to Dumbarton in the Final down at Northfield on Saturday 19th July. The Golden Boys progressed to the finals with wins over Aberdeen Seafield (19 v 8), Lochgelly (17 v 15), Sandhead (21 v 11) and West End Perth (15 v 13) before going down by 11shots to 8 shots in the Final against Dumbarton. (After writing this report, i saw that the Glasgow Herald is reporting the score as 16 v 8 and not the score quoted on the SBA website!. I will try and find out which score is correct)
Elsewhere in the Finals our District Winners all went out early doors, Andy Gilmour from Upper Cowal won his first round game 21 v 12 and then went down 21 v 8 to St Andrew's Darren Mc Kenny in the Junior Singles. Fort Matilda's Crawford lost in the first round to Peter Brown by a respectable 21 shots to 15 in his first ever time playing in the National Singles Finals. Grosvenor's Alan Bradley and John Freeburn also suffered an early exit, going down by 24 shots to 10 against Beechwood.
Much fancied Triples team of Brian Mc Alees, Sandy Wotherspoon and Freddy Kimmons went down by 17 shots to 7, also in the first round and finally the Fours team from Upper Cowal went down narrowly by 15 shots to 14 in the second round against Kilmarnock after winning their first round game 18 shots to 17 against Alloa.
The Full results from the National Finals can be found on the SBA Site.

The Fort Matilda Open Pairs was won by Grosvenor's William and Colin Mc Eachnie, full report is on the Site and can be seen by clicking here!

3rd./4th.Place play-off
Mr.J.Crawford & Mrs.J.Crawford  19  (Gourock Park)
Mr.W.Phillips & Mrs.L.Phillips    15  (Lady Alice)

The Finals of the J&L McGhee Mixed Pairs were played on Port Glasgow' BC.Games were keenly contested.
The standard of Bowling was excellent and it was a pity that there was not a bigger crowd to compliment the games. In the final, June Molloy from Ardgowan Club and Andy Buchan from Wellington Park came up against a couple of seasoned campaigners in Jim and Maureen Metcalfe from Lady Alice, who had won this Tournament before. The game was very evenly balanced up to the 10th. end at 8 shots a piece. Unfortunately, for the Wellington / Ardgowan pair, the Metcalfes won the next 7 ends to regain the trophy with a score of 18 - 8.
The 3rd./4th. play-off was also a very keenly contested game with both ladies playing a very positive part in the game. The lead swung to and fro and was level at 14 shots each at the 13th.end. The Crawfords won the next 3 ends with 5 more shots and managed to keep the score down to 1 lost shot at the last end to win by 19 - 15.
A beautiful supper was provided by the ladies of Port Glasgow B.C. and the evening was rounded off by G & D President Jim McEwan, who presented te prizes and thanked the sponsors Mr.& Mrs.J&L McGhee for their continued support of this popular tournament.

Crown Bowls!!!
The bottom green at Gourock Park hosted what was probably the first ever 'Crown Bowls' competiton ever to have been played at the club. Arranged by Vice-President, Kenny Mc Kinlay, as part of our on-going 75th Anniversary celebrations. The Honour of being Gourock Park's 1st ever 'Crown Bowls Pairs Champions' went to
Terry Duffy and John Ellis who overcame Michael Stevenson and Carol Mc Monagle by 10 shots to 7 in a 13 end Final. The event was a great success and made for an interesting and enjoyable afternoon for the majority of people who took part and i think most of the competitors would love to see this as an annual event.

Gourock Park Ladies, Carol Mc Monagle and Maureen Mc Killop recently took part in the Scottish Ladies National Championships at Northfield and Maureen has kindly sent me some photos and an e-mail regarding the event.

They won their first round game by 21 shots to 11 and didn't need to play the last end. That spurred them on to the next round, but this time were well beaten by the Pair who went onto win the 4 Bowl Pairs Championship. The Girls were not to disappointed and were glad that they got through to the last 16, they also mentioned that it was a tremendous experience and that they hope that one day they will get another bite of the cherry.
